Work-permit-exempt employment and LĐ1 in 2026

LĐ1 is the visa symbol for a foreigner working in Viet Nam who has confirmation that they are not subject to the work-permit requirement, unless an applicable treaty provides otherwise.

Exemption is category-specific

Decree 219/2025/NĐ-CP lists defined exemption cases. These are not a general waiver for foreign employees. The employer should match the worker to a statutory exemption and obtain the required confirmation when the procedure calls for it.

Duration

The confirmation generally follows the qualifying basis and is capped at two years under the current foreign-worker framework.

LĐ1 temporary residence card

A qualifying LĐ1 holder is eligible for a temporary residence card with a current statutory maximum of two years, subject to passport validity.
