Employment Temporary Residence in Slovakia — January 2025

Slovakia's ordinary temporary residence for employment is the principal route for third-country nationals taking employment that does not use a more specialized status such as the EU Blue Card.

Single-permit framework

The Ministry of Labour explains that a third-country national may be employed when granted temporary residence for employment based on confirmation that a vacancy may be filled, or in other cases where a work permit or statutory exemption applies. The single-permit process links the residence decision with labour-market authorization.

Under Act No. 404/2011 Coll. as effective on 2 January 2025, temporary residence for employment could be granted for the expected employment period, subject to the statutory ceiling then in force.

Remote work is not automatically covered

A tourist or visa-free stay is not a substitute for employment residence. Slovakia did not identify a dedicated digital-nomad residence status in the Tier-1 sources used for this snapshot. People actively running their own Slovak business should compare Business Temporary Residence.
