Slovakia immigration pathways — January 2025

Slovakia's immigration system is purpose-specific. For the user groups requested here, the relevant legal routes are business residence, the innovative-startup track inside business residence, ordinary employment residence, the EU Blue Card, a national visa for defined highly qualified third-country nationals, and research/development residence.

Digital nomads and remote workers

The Tier-1 Slovak sources used for this snapshot do not identify a dedicated digital-nomad visa or general remote-work residence route as of 2 January 2025. Visa-free or visitor status should not be treated as employment or business authorization.

A person actively operating a Slovak business may instead need Business Temporary Residence. A person employed in Slovakia should examine Employment Temporary Residence, the EU Blue Card, or the Highly Qualified National Visa, depending on the facts.

Freelancers, self-employed people and entrepreneurs

Slovakia's business residence covers a third-country national conducting business as a natural person or acting for a company/cooperative without an employment relationship. There is no separate universal "freelancer visa" in the statutory route list.

Startup founders

The Ministry of Economy publishes a Startup visas track using a business plan for an innovative project. It remains legally a Section 22 business-residence application rather than a separate residence status.

Investors

The Tier-1 sources used here do not show a passive investment, property-purchase, golden-visa or citizenship-by-investment program. Active founders/investors who actually conduct a Slovak business should examine the business-residence framework.

Skilled and highly qualified workers

Ordinary employees use the employment residence framework where applicable. Highly qualified professionals may fit the EU Blue Card, while Government Regulation 521/2021 created a national-visa mechanism for defined highly qualified graduates, jobseekers and employees.
