Hong Kong immigration and residence options in 2026

Hong Kong uses distinct admission frameworks for high-income and university-qualified talent, sponsored professionals, specified technical workers, graduates, entrepreneurs, investors, students, dependants and eligible vocational graduates.

Other legitimate categories

The Immigration Department also administers training, foreign domestic helper, imported-worker and sector-specific labour schemes, along with visit/transit and working-holiday arrangements. They are genuine immigration categories but are not modeled here as general independent skilled-migration routes because they are temporary, employer/sector-specific or visitor-oriented. Training and working-holiday permissions carry their own conditions of stay and should not be treated as substitutes for GEP, ASMTP or another general employment authorization.

No dedicated digital-nomad visa

The current scheme catalogue does not create a general digital-nomad or freelance-residence visa. Visitor permission should not be treated as work authorisation.

Permanent residence is separate

Admission under a scheme does not itself guarantee permanent residence. Ordinary residence, the applicable status and current permanent-residence rules must be assessed separately.
