Finland remote work and "digital nomad visa" options in 2026
Finland does not grant a work-based residence permit merely because a person wants to live in Finland while working remotely for a foreign employer.
What Migri says about remote work
Migri states that a person is allowed to work remotely for a foreign employer while staying in Finland legally.
But remote work for a foreign company does not on its own constitute grounds for a Finnish work-based residence permit. A work-based residence permit is granted for work that requires the employee to reside in Finland.
That means there is no dedicated Finnish "digital nomad visa" that converts foreign remote employment into a residence ground.
Short lawful stay is not long-term residence
Visa-free or Schengen-visa stay can make a person's presence lawful for the applicable short-stay period, but it does not create long-term residence rights. Finland also has specific categories of work that can be performed without a residence permit for up to 90 days, but those statutory exceptions should not be generalized to ordinary remote work.
For work lasting over 90 days that requires residence in Finland, a qualifying Finnish residence-permit ground is normally needed.
Existing residence permit
If you already hold a valid Finnish residence permit on another ground, Migri allows remote work for a foreign employer. The underlying residence permit must still remain valid on its own ground.
Tax and social security
Immigration permission does not determine Finnish tax residence, permanent establishment, payroll withholding or social-security coverage. Those questions require separate Finnish and cross-border tax/social-security analysis.
Real residence options
A remote worker may separately qualify through a genuine Finnish ground such as specialist employment, startup entrepreneurship, ordinary entrepreneurship, studies or family ties. Remote work itself is not the substitute.
