Remote-Worker / Digital Nomad Residence in Ecuador in 2026

Ecuador's official Visa de residencia temporal rentista para trabajo remoto (Visa Nómada) is a temporary-residence category for foreign nationals who own a company abroad or work/provide services for one or more persons or entities domiciled outside Ecuador. It is designed for professional or service activity performed remotely, digitally or by telework.

Income, insurance and foreign-facing work

The Ministry requires evidence of foreign-source income of at least 3 Salarios Básicos Unificados (SBU) per month for the three months before filing, or 36 SBU per year. Ecuador's 2026 SBU is USD 482, so the current arithmetic equivalent is USD 1,446 per month or USD 17,352 per year. Because the legal test is denominated in SBU, applicants should verify the SBU in force when they apply.

Applicants must also document the foreign employer, client or company relationship. A person who owns a company registered and domiciled abroad can qualify. Health insurance must cover Ecuador for the visa period. To sponsor dependants, the official procedure requires USD 250 additional monthly income per dependant.

What this route does not prove

This category is expressly built around an employer, client or company domiciled abroad. It should not be treated as a blanket authorization to take Ecuador-based employment or to assume that local professional licensing rules disappear. A founder planning to operate a local Ecuador business should compare Investor Residence, Autonomous Professional / Services Residence, or an eligible nationality-based route.

Duration and filing

The official procedure states a validity of up to two years and uses the Ministry's e-VISAS process. General requirements include passport, criminal-record documentation, lawful-means evidence and the prescribed fees.

Long-term settlement is a separate step. Ecuador maintains a permanent-residence pathway for qualifying temporary residents after the required continuous-residence period, but applicants must preserve the underlying qualifying facts and comply with the rules in force when filing.
