Ecuador immigration and residence options in 2026

Ecuador has distinct routes for foreign-facing remote work, local self-employment and consulting, professional practice, dependent employment, investment, nationality/treaty-based residence, short business visits, rentista income and family members. Company ownership, tax registration, professional licensing and immigration status are separate legal questions.

Remote workers and foreign-company owners

The Remote-Worker / Digital Nomad Residence expressly covers applicants who own a company registered and domiciled abroad as well as foreign employees and contractors. The statutory income test is 3 SBU per month for the preceding three months or 36 SBU per year. With the 2026 SBU at USD 482, those arithmetic references are USD 1,446 monthly or USD 17,352 yearly. The foreign-facing nature of the route matters: it is not a generic local-employment visa.

Founders, consultants and professionals

For local economic activity, compare Autonomous Professional / Services Residence, Investor Residence, Professional / Technician Residence, and Employer-Sponsored Work Residence.

The investor category includes deposits of at least 730 days, qualifying Ecuador property, or Ecuador-company shares/participations at 100 SBU, among other state-contract bases. At the 2026 SBU that is currently USD 48,200, but the legal threshold remains SBU-denominated.

Nationality-based routes

Eligible Andean nationals can use Andean Community Residence; Decision 878 gives Andean residents access to activity on their own account or as employees under the same conditions as receiving-country nationals, subject to local law. Nationals covered by the MERCOSUR Residence Agreement can use MERCOSUR Residence.

Short business visits and non-work income

The Business Visitor — Acts of Commerce route covers authorized short-stay business activity for up to 180 days with multiple entries; it is not a replacement for residence for ongoing local work. Rentista Residence is distinct from the nomad category and relies on qualifying personal rent/investment-type income.

Family and settlement

Family / Dependant Residence follows the sponsor's qualifying temporary residence. Ecuador also maintains permanent-residence pathways after qualifying continuous temporary residence; the current procedure requires evidence of the residence period and continued qualifying basis. Settlement rules should be rechecked immediately before filing.
