Taiwan freelance and self-employment options in 2026
Taiwan does not use one universal "freelancer visa" for every self-employed person. The correct route depends on where the clients are, what work is performed, and whether the person qualifies for an individual/open work permit.
Common frameworks
- Employment Gold Card: open work permit for qualifying foreign special professionals; not tied to one employer.
- Entrepreneur Visa: residence route for qualifying startup founders; work still has to comply with applicable employment-permit rules.
- Digital Nomad Visa: permits remote work for overseas activity, but not services to Taiwan businesses/employers.
- Top-200 university graduate individual work permit: a foreign national who obtained a bachelor's degree or higher within the past five years from a Ministry of Education-listed top-200 university can apply directly for an individual professional work permit valid for up to 2 years; it is non-extendable and cannot be repeated.
- Certain artists and other categories have their own individual-permit rules.
Company ownership, tax registration, invoice issuance and immigration work permission are separate questions.
