Taiwan immigration and residence options in 2026
Taiwan now has several distinct pathways for international professionals, founders, investors, remote workers and graduates. The most important step is separating work permission, visa status, ARC residence, company/investment approval, and permanent residence.
Current route map
- Employment Gold Card
- Foreign Professional Work and Residence
- Entrepreneur Visa
- Investment Resident Visa
- Digital Nomad Visa
- Employment-Seeking Visa
- Freelance and Self-Employment Options
- Student and Graduate Work Options
- Family Residence and Spouse Work
- Permanent Residence (APRC)
Professionals and the Gold Card
The Employment Gold Card combines an open work permit, resident visa, ARC and re-entry permit for qualifying foreign special professionals. It is available for one to three years and is not tied to a single employer.
Ordinary professional employment generally uses employer-sponsored work permission. The 2026 Foreign Professionals Act also expanded direct residence options and individual work-permit pathways for some graduates.
Founders and investors
The Entrepreneur Visa is the startup-focused route. Current NIA guidance provides an initial two-year residence period and multiple qualification pathways, including recognized startup investment, incubator participation, patents/skills and qualifying Taiwan startup investment.
The separate investor residence basis uses a US$200,000 investment threshold. Neither should be confused with the much higher investment-immigration APRC thresholds.
Digital nomads and job seekers
Taiwan's Digital Nomad Visa is a six-month multiple-entry visitor visa that can be extended in six-month blocks for a maximum total stay of two years. It is for remote work that does not provide services to Taiwan businesses or employers.
The Employment-Seeking Visa can provide up to six months to seek professional work under current salary, graduate or authority-approved eligibility rules.
Permanent residence
General foreign professionals normally use a five-year APRC framework, while foreign special professionals generally use three years, with certain high-level cases eligible after one year. Presence and study-period deductions are governed by specific current rules.
Official starting points: Gold Card, Entrepreneur Visa, Digital Nomad Visa, Employment-Seeking Visa, and Foreign Talent Act.
