Switzerland third-country skilled work permits in 2026
Nationals outside the EU/EFTA face a materially stricter labour-market test. SEM states that ordinary admission is generally for highly qualified managers, specialists and other skilled professionals, typically with higher education and relevant professional experience.
Employer-led admission
A firm job offer is not enough by itself. The Swiss employer normally applies to the competent cantonal labour-market or migration authority. Approved cases are forwarded to SEM for federal review.
The authorities examine, among other things:
- the overall economic interest;
- whether suitable workers with Swiss or EU/EFTA precedence could be recruited;
- the applicant's professional qualifications and integration factors;
- salary, social-security and employment conditions customary for the region, profession and sector;
- quota availability.
2026 quota
For 2026, the Federal Council kept the third-country quota at 8,500 qualified workers and specialists: 4,500 B permits and 4,000 L permits. This is an annual ceiling, not an individual entitlement.
A work permit decision and entry permission are distinct. A visa may also be required depending on nationality, and the worker must complete local registration before starting employment.
