Switzerland study and post-study work rules in 2026

Study residence is distinct from ordinary employment permission. The exact residence process depends on nationality and canton.

For third-country students at a Swiss university or university of applied sciences, the competent canton may authorise supplementary employment. SEM states that work can begin no earlier than six months after studies start and is generally limited to 15 hours per week outside holidays. The institution must confirm that the job is compatible with the studies, and the employer must submit the required application and respect normal pay and working conditions.

Six-month post-study search period

A third-country national who graduates from a recognised Swiss higher education institution has a six-month period after completing studies or training in Switzerland to look for work matching the qualification.

For employment after a Swiss degree, the usual Swiss/EU/EFTA precedence rule can be waived where the proposed work represents an overriding scientific or economic interest. This is not an automatic work permit; the employment still needs the applicable approval.
