Switzerland remote work and digital-nomad options in 2026

Switzerland does not publish a dedicated digital-nomad visa or general remote-worker residence permit.

That means a person cannot treat a Schengen visit, visa-free stay, company registration or foreign employment contract as automatic authority to live and work from Switzerland.

The correct immigration basis depends on the actual facts:

  • EU/EFTA citizens may rely on free movement when they meet the relevant residence/work conditions;
  • genuine EU/EFTA self-employment can use the self-employed free-movement route;
  • third-country employees ordinarily need to satisfy the restrictive work-admission framework;
  • third-country founders need the Article 19 self-employment/economic-interest route;
  • family or study status can carry separate work rules;
  • cross-border commuters use G-permit/notification frameworks rather than a "nomad" permit.

Remote work also creates separate questions around tax residence, payroll, permanent establishment, labour law and social security. Those issues can change even when immigration status is valid.
