Spouse and Family Residence Visa in Sri Lanka in 2026
Sri Lanka's residence framework includes a Family Members of a Sri Lankan category for foreign spouses and qualifying dependent children.
First spouse grant and extensions
The Department's current procedure covers a non-Sri Lankan spouse where the marriage has subsisted for more than six months at application. The first grant is listed as one year. Extensions are generally two years at a time until five years of spouse-visa status, then five years at a time, subject to the current rules and passport validity.
The Sri Lankan spouse is required to participate in the process, including an interview, and supporting civil-status and identity documents are required.
Permanent residence is separate
A spouse visa is not itself permanent residence. The current Permanent Residence Visa has its own eligibility test, including a five-year marriage condition for the relevant spouse category.
