South Africa's remote-work route is legally a visitor's visa for prescribed remote-work activity, not a separate residence class for local employment.
Core eligibility
The current Department of Home Affairs checklist requires a valid employment contract with a foreign-based employer and proof of sufficient financial means. DHA defines that financial threshold as gross salary of at least R650,796 per year, evidenced through recent bank statements.
The current checklist applies to stays exceeding 3 months and up to 3 years.
Work and tax distinction
This route is designed for foreign employment performed remotely from South Africa. It should not be presented as permission to take South African employment or as a general local freelance permit.
DHA's checklist also flags South African Revenue Service registration rules depending on tax-residence/treaty status and whether presence exceeds an aggregate 183 days in a 12-month period. Immigration eligibility and tax residence are separate legal questions.
