South African immigration law contains family- and relationship-based temporary and permanent residence pathways, but eligibility depends on the precise relationship and sponsor status.
Relationship evidence matters
Spousal and relative applications require evidence prescribed by the Immigration Act and Regulations. A family relationship does not automatically give unrestricted work rights; immigration conditions depend on the visa or permit granted.
Family of skilled and remote workers
Do not assume every dependent automatically receives the same work authorization as the principal applicant. The March 2026 White Paper proposes future reforms for spouses of skilled-worker visa holders, but those proposals should not be presented as current law.
