Permanent Residence in South Africa in 2026
South African permanent residence is governed separately from temporary visitor, work and business visas.
Separate statutory categories
Permanent residence may be available through direct-residence or other statutory categories where the applicant satisfies the Immigration Act. Temporary residence on a work or business visa does not automatically become permanent residence merely through passage of time.
Employment-based planning
The March 2026 final revised White Paper proposes a future skilled-worker system with clearer renewal and permanent-residence pathways for qualifying workers. That proposal is not current permanent-residence law.
Applicants should use the current Department of Home Affairs permanent-residence requirements and should not rely on generalized claims that any temporary visa guarantees settlement.
