Scientific Research in Romania in 2026
Third-country researchers can use Romania's long-stay route for scientific research where the host and project satisfy the statutory research framework.
Hosting agreement and approvals
The Romanian research/development institution must be properly recognized and the researcher needs the required hosting/reception agreement and official approval process described by IGI.
The entry step is a long-stay visa for scientific research. After entry, the researcher applies for temporary residence.
Residence duration
Current IGI guidance states that temporary residence for scientific research is extended for the period in the hosting agreement, but for no more than 5 consecutive years.
Researchers holding qualifying research residence from another EU Member State may have mobility options under the applicable rules.
A researcher with this status may also carry out educational activities under Romanian law.
This route is different from an ordinary employment visa even when the research activity is paid.
