Family Reunification in Romania in 2026
Romanian family reunification depends on the sponsor's immigration status and the family relationship.
Sponsor eligibility
For a non-EU/EEA sponsor, current IGI guidance states that family reunification can be requested by a holder of a temporary residence permit valid for one year, an EU Blue Card, an ICT permit, a Mobile ICT permit, a long-term residence permit, or qualifying refugee/subsidiary-protection status.
Family members
The eligible categories include a spouse, unmarried minor children of the sponsor or spouse (including adopted children) and certain dependent first-degree relatives in the ascending line or adult unmarried children who cannot support themselves for medical reasons, subject to the statutory conditions.
Family reunification for family members of Romanian citizens follows a separate route and eligibility list.
The residence and work consequences for the family member depend on the exact family basis and document. Do not infer unrestricted work or settlement rights simply from the sponsor's status.
