Permanent Residence — Special Categories in Poland in 2026
Poland's national permanent-residence permit is not the ordinary “live in Poland for five years and qualify” route for every third-country national.
Who can qualify
It is granted only in statutory categories, including specified cases involving Polish origin or a valid Pole's Card, family connections, beneficiaries of protection, and other situations listed in the Foreigners Act.
Some categories have residence-period requirements, but the rules differ by legal basis. For example, certain protection-based cases use specific five- or ten-year periods, and other categories may not require a standard prior-residence period at all.
Indefinite status
The permanent-residence permit is granted indefinitely. The residence card issued after grant is valid for 10 years and is replaced when needed; the underlying status is not renewed every ten years.
For an ordinary economic migrant who does not fall into a national permanent-residence category, the more relevant general settlement route is often the separate long-term EU resident permit after five years of qualifying residence.
