Norway remote work and "digital nomad visa" rules in 2026
Norway does not publish a general national digital-nomad residence permit.
Except for EU/EEA citizens using free-movement rights, a foreign national physically working in Norway generally needs a residence permit that gives the right to perform that work. UDI treats work for a foreign employer from a Norwegian home, hotel or other location as remote work.
A visitor cannot normally use a holiday or visit as a way to work full time for an employer abroad. Limited incidental activity such as checking email, making telephone calls or joining digital meetings can be acceptable when remote work is not the main purpose of the stay, does not create value in Norway, and is not connected to Norway.
A skilled-worker permit does not create a general side-business or location-independent work right: remote work must be part of the job covered by the permit. A self-employed skilled-worker permit likewise restricts the holder to the approved business.
EU/EEA citizens have separate free-movement rights, but tax, social-security, registration and employment-law questions remain distinct from immigration permission.
