Norway foreign-company assignments in 2026
Skilled employees of companies abroad can use a specific assignment-based residence route when their foreign employer has a contract with a Norwegian enterprise. International-company employees assigned to a Norwegian branch use a closely related category.
The Norwegian enterprise must have a registered business address, the assignment must normally concern one Norwegian enterprise, and the Norwegian client cannot be a staffing company. The employee must satisfy the skilled-worker qualification rules and pay and working conditions must not be poorer than normal in Norway.
An assignment permit can generally be granted for up to two years at a time and for up to six years in total. After six years, the worker normally must live outside Norway for two years before a new permit of this type can be granted.
Time on this assignment route does not normally count toward permanent residence. Family immigration may be available where the assignment lasts more than six months or for qualifying international-company assignments.
Remote work is not an independent right; it must be part of the assignment covered by the permit.
