Lithuania immigration and residence options in 2026

Lithuania uses distinct tracks for ordinary employment, highly qualified work, innovative startup founders, business activity, study, family life and long-term residence. Company registration, e-residency or a short-stay visa should not be confused with a residence permit.

Employment in late 2026

Lithuania's 2026 employment quota of 24,706 is exhausted. After exhaustion, ordinary work residence generally requires current remuneration of at least EUR 2,893.68 (1.2 BDU), or EUR 2,411.40 (1 BDU) for a listed high-value shortage occupation.

Highly qualified workers should separately review the EU Blue Card, whose salary and qualification rules differ from the ordinary quota route.

Founders, entrepreneurs and remote workers

Innovative non-EU founders can use Startup Visa Lithuania. Ordinary company owners and managers should review business, shareholder and manager options. Company formation alone is not residence.

Lithuania currently has no dedicated national digital-nomad permit. Remote workers need a genuine residence/work basis, and e-residency is not immigration residence.

Study, graduates, research and family

The May 2026 reforms changed student work limits and family rules. Qualifying graduates can use the post-study framework to seek work, begin employment or engage in self-employed activity. Researchers and family members use separate residence grounds.

Long-term residence

A principal ordinary permanent-residence route is based on five years of continuous qualifying temporary residence, subject to current counting and continuity rules.
