Long-Term Residence Cards in Hungary in 2026
Hungary has more than one long-term-residence category for third-country nationals. Two important routes are the National Residence Card and the EU Residence Card.
National Residence Card
Current OIF guidance states that an eligible third-country national may qualify after at least 3 years of lawful and uninterrupted residence before application, subject to the category's exclusions and other conditions. Family-based alternatives also exist in specific cases.
The National Residence Card document is valid for up to 10 years and can be extended by 10 years.
Not every temporary status counts or can lead to this card. For example, current OIF factsheets explicitly exclude White Card, ordinary employment, guest-worker and guest-self-employment holders from the national residence card route.
EU Residence Card
The EU Residence Card generally requires at least 5 years of legal residence in Hungary. Special aggregation rules exist for EU Blue Card holders, including qualifying periods in other EU Member States.
The EU Residence Card document is also valid for up to 10 years and extendable by 10 years.
Do not use “permanent residence” as a single undifferentiated category: the legal basis and qualifying residence periods matter.
