Cyprus long-term resident status in 2026

Cyprus provides EU-law long-term resident status for qualifying third-country nationals who have built sufficient legal and continuous residence in the areas controlled by the Republic.

This status is different from Regulation 6(2) investor permanent residence and the standard Immigration Permit categories.

Five years of legal and continuous residence

The Migration Department states that the applicant generally must have resided legally and continuously for the previous five years and hold a valid Cyprus residence permit when applying.

Not every kind of stay counts toward this period.

Absence limits

Absences do not interrupt the five-year calculation when they are:

  • shorter than six consecutive months; and
  • no more than 10 months in total during the relevant five-year period.

Longer or more frequent absences can affect the qualifying calculation.

Excluded categories

The official page excludes several categories from the normal acquisition route, including:

  • students and persons residing for vocational training;
  • certain protection/asylum situations; and
  • persons whose stay is solely temporary, including specified seasonal or restricted categories.

This is why a simple "five years in Cyprus" statement is not enough.

Application and permit duration

The Migration Department publishes an application fee of €30 and an examination period of approximately 6–12 months for a complete acquisition application.

The initial long-term residence permit is valid for five years. Renewal follows the separate long-term-resident renewal process.

Work and family

Long-term residents can have broader labour-market treatment than many temporary categories, but the exact right should be checked under the status and employment rules.

Family members use the family-reunification framework applicable to long-term residents.

Not the same as investor PR

The Regulation 6(2) investor permit provides an unlimited residence right subject to its investment and maintenance conditions. That is a different route from EU long-term resident status acquired after qualifying residence.

The traditional Immigration Permit categories are also separate.

Citizenship is separate

Long-term resident status is not Cyprus citizenship or naturalisation. Citizenship has separate residence, language, integration and other statutory requirements and should be analysed independently.

Cyprus and Schengen

A Cyprus long-term or permanent residence document should not be described as though Cyprus were already a full Schengen member. EU and Schengen legal effects are not interchangeable.
