Cyprus immigration and residence options in 2026

Cyprus offers several distinct routes for third-country nationals, but they solve different problems. A remote worker using the Digital Nomad scheme, an employee of a qualifying company, a Blue Card professional, a startup founder and an investor permanent-residence applicant are not using interchangeable permits.

Company formation, employment permission, tax residence, non-dom treatment and citizenship are separate legal questions. A Cyprus company or tax registration does not itself create immigration permission.

Digital nomads

The Migration Department is again accepting Digital Nomad residence applications. The scheme remains capped at 500 permits and is for non-EU/non-EEA nationals who work remotely for an employer abroad or provide remote services to foreign clients.

The main applicant must show at least €3,500 net monthly income. The first residence permit is valid for one year and renewal can be issued for up to two further years. Family members can reside for the same period but cannot work or carry out economic activity under their dependant status.

Employment routes are not all the same

Highly paid third-country staff at registered Companies of Foreign Interests generally need at least €2,500 gross monthly salary, relevant academic qualifications or at least two years' relevant experience, and an employment contract of at least two years.

The separate EU Blue Card is currently limited to ICT, pharmaceutical research and maritime roles excluding captains and crew. The minimum gross annual salary is €43,632.

Ordinary remunerated employment follows the GEN single-permit framework and normally requires a work-purpose entry permit plus the residence and work permit.

Startup founders

The Cyprus Startup Visa Scheme is renewed through December 2026. The innovation authority's initial approval can support economic activity for two years and possible renewal, but it does not itself grant entry, residence or employment permission. Those immigration steps remain separate.

Permanent residence and independent means

The expedited Regulation 6(2) investor policy requires at least €300,000 in one of the official investment categories plus secured annual income starting at €50,000, with additional amounts for spouse and dependent children.

Cyprus also maintains the older Immigration Permit categories A–F. Category F is based on secured foreign income and no need to work in Cyprus; it is not a digital-nomad permit and should not be confused with Regulation 6(2).

Study, family and long-term residence

Students may work only within the permitted sectors/occupations and normally up to 20 hours per week during classes and 38 hours during academic breaks.

Family-reunification rules differ depending on whether the sponsor is a third-country national, Cypriot, EU/EEA citizen, Blue Card holder, Company of Foreign Interests employee, or Digital Nomad.

EU long-term resident status generally requires five years of legal and continuous residence. Absences of less than six consecutive months can count if total absences do not exceed ten months in the five-year period; some temporary categories and student residence are excluded.

Cyprus is not yet a full Schengen member

Cyprus is an EU member but is still in the process of joining the Schengen area. Cyprus residence or a Cyprus national visa should not be described as if it were a Schengen residence permit or Schengen visa.
