Burkina Faso Freelancer and Self-Employment Options in 2026
Burkina Faso does not publish a standalone national freelancer visa or generic self-employment immigration permit in the current official visa catalogue.
A freelancer therefore needs to analyze the real legal layers separately: immigration stay, commercial authorization/business registration, and any applicable labour rules.
Foreign clients do not create a visa category
A consultant, developer, designer or other professional paid by foreign clients may still be physically performing economic activity while in Burkina Faso.
The official short-stay page does not provide a foreign-client work exemption. Instead it says that short-stay status does not authorize work without prior labour authorization.
That is why this guide does not describe tourist or business eVisa status as a “freelancer visa”.
Registering as an individual business
Burkina Faso's Public Service portal publishes a procedure for registering a personne physique / entreprise individuelle.
The official description groups business formalities including RCCM registration, tax existence declaration and IFU, professional trader card, and employer notification to the social-security system.
This is business registration, not immigration status.
Foreign commercial authorization
A foreign natural or legal person wishing to exercise commercial activity in Burkina Faso must consider the official Autorisation d’exercer le commerce (AEC).
The AEC is a separate commercial authorization. Holding it does not by itself create a long-stay visa, residence permit or work permit.
Company route

Labour rules
The 2026 Labour Code is explicit for employers recruiting non-national non-resident workers. A genuine independent-business structure can present a different legal fact pattern, but current official sources do not publish a general “freelancer exemption” from immigration or labour requirements.
Get the intended structure confirmed before relying on self-employment as a work-permit workaround.
Long-term residence
If the freelancer wants to remain more than 90 days, the immigration side must also be addressed. Visa Burkina says stays beyond 90 days require qualifying long-stay/residence documentation.
