Burkina Faso Immigration for Work, Business and Remote Workers in 2026

Burkina Faso separates entry/stay permission, labour authorization, and business registration. A business visa is not automatically a work permit, registering a company does not itself create immigration status, and search phrases such as “Burkina Faso digital nomad visa” do not create a legal category that the government has not published.

Verified 18 September 2026: current official sources do not publish a dedicated national digital-nomad visa, startup visa, entrepreneur residence visa, freelancer visa, or generic self-employment visa.

Short stay: business is allowed, work is not automatic

Visa Burkina says a short-stay visa cannot exceed 90 days and can be issued for tourism, business or family visits. The same page states that the short-stay visa does not give the holder the right to work in Burkina Faso without prior authorization from the minister in charge of labour.

2026 foreign-worker rules

The government summary of the Labour Code adopted on 6 May 2026 says the new framework requires, for an employer recruiting a non-national non-resident worker, prior authorization from the public employment service, a work permit, and validation of the foreign worker's employment contract before it begins to be performed.

Burkina Faso's official work-card portal also states that the carte de travail is mandatory.

Business, founders and startups

Burkina Faso publishes both short-stay and long-stay business visas. That does not amount to a dedicated startup or entrepreneur residence programme.

Foreign persons or entities wishing to carry on commercial activity must also consider the official Autorisation d’exercer le commerce (AEC). CEFORE handles company-registration formalities such as RCCM, tax identification and employer notification. Those commercial steps do not replace immigration or labour permission.

Digital nomads, freelancers and self-employed professionals

No dedicated digital-nomad, freelancer or self-employed immigration route was identified in the current official visa catalogue.

A remote professional should not assume that being paid by a foreign client or employer turns a short-stay visa into work authorization. Likewise, business registration is not residence permission.

Long-stay and residence documents

The official long-stay visa is valid for more than 90 days. The current checklist requires a passport, form, photos, proof of purpose, medical certificate, support or sufficient income, health insurance and payment evidence.

Visa Burkina's stay-conditions page states that a foreigner wanting to remain for more than 90 days must hold qualifying long-stay/residence documentation. Its migration-service page also says that a resident long-stay application can result in a residence permit.

ECOWAS nationals

The current official stay-conditions page says ECOWAS nationals are exempt from the residence permit, but must have a valid consular identity card. That does not automatically settle employment or commercial-activity requirements.

Visa Burkina currently lists short-stay business at 77,000 CFA francs single-entry / 93,500 multiple-entry, and long-stay business at 187,000 CFA francs. Always confirm the live official tariff before payment.
