EEA and Swiss Work Residence Permit (B) in Liechtenstein — January 2025 snapshot

Liechtenstein's B residence permit for gainful employment is the long-stay residence route for people working in Liechtenstein who cannot simply remain cross-border commuters. A B permit covers residence for more than 12 months.

EEA quota structure

Liechtenstein has a special EEA residence-quota arrangement. The official administration explains that EEA work residence permits are split between Government allocation and a lottery. The EEA lottery is held twice a year and requires actual employment in Liechtenstein; employment abroad is not permitted for that lottery category.

Swiss nationals are handled through Government allocation rather than the EEA lottery.

Work and residence are linked

This is a residence-for-employment route, not a general residence permit for remote workers. A person who can lawfully commute from abroad should also compare the EEA cross-border commuter registration.

There is no separate digital-nomad, startup-founder or investor visa embedded in the B-permit system. Company ownership or investment does not by itself create a residence entitlement.
