El Salvador permanent residence

DGME maintains a separate Residencia Definitiva framework. Its published forms cover multiple definitive-residence categories, pensioners, spouses or partners of Salvadorans, refugees or stateless persons, and other protected categories.

Long-term status

Permanent residents use a residence card that must be periodically renewed. DGME states that definitive residence can generally be renewed for one to four years at a time.

Absence rule

DGME's FAQ states that definitive residents can remain outside El Salvador for up to two years without losing their status. Longer absences can affect residence rights.

Work authorization

Permanent residence and employment rules should still be checked against the person's exact category and activity. Applicants should not infer work rights solely from a generic residence label.
