Canada immigration and visa options in 2026

Canada does not have one general immigration visa. The right path depends on whether you are working remotely for a foreign employer, taking Canadian employment, immigrating as a skilled worker, receiving a provincial nomination, studying, joining family, or using a regional program.

IRCC still describes foreign-employed digital nomads as able to live and work remotely in Canada for up to six months on visitor status when they are not entering the Canadian labour market. This is not a dedicated digital-nomad visa and does not authorize Canadian employment.

Express Entry manages CEC, FSWP and FSTP. The FSWP 67-point eligibility grid is separate from CRS ranking. Since 25 March 2025, job offers no longer receive CRS points, although job offers can still matter for program eligibility.

Canada's study rules also changed. For applications on or after 1 September 2026 outside Quebec, IRCC publishes CAD 23,448 as the one-person first-year living-expense amount, excluding tuition and transport. Eligible students may work off campus up to 24 hours a week during regular terms. Eligible public-DLI master's and doctoral students are PAL/TAL-exempt from 1 January 2026.

The federal Start-up Visa is paused after 30 June 2026, and the federal Self-Employed Persons Program remains paused. IRCC is developing a High Impact Start-up Pilot, but a complete open application framework has not yet been published.

Founders should therefore compare provincial and territorial entrepreneur programs. Current official sources confirm active business pathways in multiple jurisdictions, while Saskatchewan permanently closed its entrepreneur/farm routes in 2025. Québec runs separate business-selection programs outside the PNP, including entrepreneur and self-employed routes.

A business owner who can show significant Canadian economic, social or cultural benefit may also need to examine the significant-benefit entrepreneur work permit. This is an LMIA-exempt temporary work-permit assessment, not an automatic entrepreneur visa or PR program.

Regional options remain important: AIP is open, and RCIP/FCIP are open across 18 selected communities.

This guide is editorial information, not government guidance or individualized legal advice. Quebec has separate selection powers and provincial criteria can change independently.
