Botswana Digital Nomad and Remote Work Rules in 2026
Botswana does not publish a dedicated national digital-nomad or remote-worker visa in the current official visa and immigration service catalogue.
That means there is no government application called the “Botswana digital nomad visa” with its own published foreign-income threshold, remote-employer test or nomad-specific residence term.
Visitor visa is not a general work authorization
Botswana's official Visitor's Visa contains a direct restriction: for the visa to remain valid, the applicant must not work for, provide services to, or sell goods to businesses or the public in Botswana.
That rule is narrower than every conceivable foreign-employer remote-work situation, but it prevents a responsible guide from saying “just enter as a visitor and work remotely”.
What if my employer or clients are outside Botswana?
Current official pages do not publish a blanket remote-work exemption based solely on the employer/client being foreign.
Botswana's work-permit service broadly describes permission for a non-citizen to work for reward or invest for profit. Without a dedicated remote-worker category, a person planning to perform their ordinary job habitually from Botswana should get a classification from the Department of Labour and Social Security and Immigration for their exact structure.

Visa-free entry and eVisa
Whether a person needs an entry visa depends on nationality. Botswana's eVisa portal supports online visa applications for visa-required travellers.
Entry permission answers whether you can enter/stay as a visitor. It does not independently answer whether work is lawful.
Could an Employment Visa solve remote work?
The official Employment Visa is designed for people travelling for employment, internship, research, work or voluntary services, but its own page says the applicant must already have a valid work and residence permit.
It is therefore not a shortcut for obtaining a nomad work right.
Could I create a company?
A founder genuinely investing and operating in Botswana can assess the investor/entrepreneur route.
That route requires real investment/business evidence. Registering a company only to label foreign remote work as “entrepreneurship” does not automatically establish immigration eligibility.
Freelancer or contractor
An independent contractor faces the same core problem: Botswana does not publish a generic freelancer/remote-worker permit.
Review the freelancer and self-employment guide, then obtain official confirmation for the actual work arrangement before relocating.
Tax is separate
A work/residence permission decision is separate from tax residence, business registration, invoicing and social-security obligations. Long-term remote workers should analyze those questions separately under Botswana's tax/business rules.
