Botswana Investor and Entrepreneur Immigration in 2026

Botswana supports foreign investors and entrepreneurs through a combination of visa, work-permit, residence, and investment-facilitation processes. It does not publish one all-in-one “startup visa” or automatic residence-by-investment product.

The legal meaning of each document matters.

Investor work permit

The Government of Botswana work-permit service says the permit can authorize a non-citizen to invest in Botswana for profit.

Its investor checklist includes:

  • bank statement/proof of investment;
  • lease or proof of place of operation;
  • company registration documents;
  • employee list, with Omang for citizens and work/residence permits for non-citizens;
  • list of valued assets;
  • valid trade licence;
  • passport;
  • company profile;
  • current bank statement certified by the bank; and
  • passport photos.

The current work-permit fee is BWP 1,500, with a published service time of 14 working days.

Business Visa: exploration, not residence

Botswana's official Business Visa is for prospective investors, entrepreneurs or traders who are visiting to explore opportunities.

The government lists activities such as:

  • consulting business associates;
  • attending meetings;
  • attending professional/business conferences;
  • negotiating contracts; and
  • other specified business-visit activities.

That is different from operating the business as a resident investor.

The Ministry of International Relations currently lists the Business Visa at BWP 700.

Investment Visa

The Ministry of International Relations also lists an Investment Visa at BWP 1,500 in its current visa schedule.

The visa category should not be confused with a work permit, residence permit or permanent residence. The official immigration/work pages still require the relevant underlying permissions for living and working/investing in Botswana.

BITC and BOSSC

The Botswana Investment and Trade Centre's BOSSC is a government-linked investment facilitation centre.

For BITC-accredited investors, BOSSC can coordinate:

  • company/business registration;
  • trade/business licensing;
  • entry visas;
  • work and residence permits;
  • work-permit exemptions;
  • tax/VAT registration;
  • land/utilities and other business-establishment matters.

BITC accreditation is a facilitation relationship, not an immigration permit by itself.

BITC says facilitation eligibility considers factors such as employment creation, skills/technology transfer, local inputs, export/import substitution, linkages, innovation and priority sectors.

Work-permit exemption for supported investors

The government Certificate of Exemption service lists as potentially eligible:

  • investors who already hold permanent residence; and
  • investors of worth supported by BITC.

A BITC-supported investor should not assume exemption is automatic; the exemption is a separate government process.

Is there a Botswana startup visa?

No dedicated national startup/innovation-founder visa was identified in the current official visa and immigration catalogues.

A startup founder is therefore better analyzed through:

  1. business/investment entry permission where required;
  2. investor work authorization;
  3. residence permission;
  4. company/trade/tax licensing; and
  5. BITC facilitation where the project qualifies.

Permanent residence for investors

Botswana's official permanent-residence page contains a significant investor exception.

While the general rule refers to at least five years of lawful continuous residence, the investor section says investors may apply even if they have stayed for less than five years.

The investor application still requires substantial evidence, including shares, incorporation, directors, current financial statements, business premises, trade licence, employee/wage information, passport and tax-return documentation.

That is an early-eligibility provision—not guaranteed permanent residence or citizenship by investment.
