Belize Temporary Residence for Investors in 2026

Belize Immigration publishes a specific Temporary Residence status for people who have made, or are making, a substantial commercial investment in Belize but cannot satisfy the physical-presence restrictions required for ordinary Permanent Residence.

The current minimum investment threshold is BZ$500,000.

This is the closest official match to many searches for “Belize investor visa” or “Belize residence by investment,” but it should not be confused with a passive citizenship-by-investment program or with the Belize Tourism Board's separate QRP Investor framework.

Who qualifies?

Belize Immigration describes Temporary Residence as intended for people who:

  • have made or are in the process of making a substantial commercial investment in Belize; and
  • because of commitments outside Belize cannot meet the restrictions attached to the ordinary Permanent Residence route.

The current qualification page requires evidence of investments in Belize valued at not less than BZ$500,000.

What investments can support the application?

The official Temporary Residence document list asks for details and evidence of the Belize investment and identifies examples including:

  • title to real estate;
  • business or personal bank statements;
  • company registration certificate or other evidence showing ownership or a majority/controlling interest in a corporate body;
  • trade licence;
  • Social Security registration/card;
  • General Sales Tax returns; and
  • Income Tax returns.

The route is therefore evidence-based. Buying a property or registering a company does not automatically produce residence without an approved application.

Residence in Belize must also be evidenced

The current document requirements ask for evidence that the applicant has a residence in Belize, such as:

  • rental/lease agreement plus utility bill; or
  • property title plus municipal property-tax assessment.

This is distinct from the BZ$500,000 investment evidence.

Other application documents

The current official list includes:

  • valid passport;
  • police record from the applicant's last country of residence, valid for six months from application;
  • a letter to the Director of Nationality and Passports explaining the reason for requesting Temporary Residence;
  • evidence of residence in Belize; and
  • evidence of the qualifying investment.

Spouse and children may be included where the route requirements are met.

Duration and renewal

Temporary Residence is valid for one year and is renewable annually.

This structure is useful for investors whose international commitments make Belize's ordinary Permanent Residence presence rule impractical.

Fees

Belize Immigration states that the Temporary Residence fee is one-fifth of the Permanent Residence fee applicable to the applicant's nationality.

Current published Permanent Residence fees are nationality-based, for example:

  • CARICOM countries: BZ$1,000;
  • Central American countries, Mexico and Dominican Republic: BZ$1,500;
  • Commonwealth countries: BZ$3,000;
  • European countries: BZ$6,000; and
  • other countries: BZ$4,000.

The corresponding Temporary Residence fee is one-fifth of the applicable figure. Applicants should confirm the classification and current fee before payment.

Does Temporary Residence authorize work?

Do not treat investment residence as a substitute for work authorization.

The residence pages establish immigration status. Belize Immigration separately publishes the Temporary Employment Permit for people who intend to work, including self-employed business owners/directors.

An investor who will personally manage or work in the business should therefore assess the Self-Employed Work Permit rather than assuming that capital ownership alone grants unrestricted work rights.

Company registration

Belize Companies and Corporate Affairs Registry permits company incorporation, including entities with foreign participants. BCCAR states that a company with foreign participants must use a Licensed Registered Agent.

Company law, immigration status, work authorization, tax registration and trade/sector licences remain separate compliance layers.

Property investment

The Immigration Department lists real-estate title as one form of evidence that may support the investment requirement. That does not mean every Belize property purchase qualifies.

The controlling requirement is the total qualifying investment evidence accepted by Immigration at or above BZ$500,000, along with the rest of the Temporary Residence requirements.

Comparison with ordinary Permanent Residence

The ordinary Permanent Residence route requires at least one year of legal residence and no more than 14 days total outside Belize during that year.

Temporary Residence is specifically described as serving substantial investors who cannot meet those ordinary restrictions because of commitments abroad.

That makes route selection heavily dependent on presence patterns:

  • if you can live continuously in Belize for the qualifying year, ordinary Permanent Residence may be the more direct long-term settlement route;
  • if significant overseas commitments prevent that, investment Temporary Residence may better fit the official purpose of the category.

Comparison with QRP Investor

The QRP Investor is a different program administered by the Belize Tourism Board for approved QRP members.

Its current capital requirement is BZ$1,000,000 / US$500,000, plus 90 non-consecutive days of Belize residence and at least five Belizean employees. It should not be confused with the BZ$500,000 Immigration Department Temporary Residence threshold.

Tax and operating compliance

An investor operating a Belize business should separately review Belize Tax Services, GST, trade-licence, sector-regulatory and Social Security obligations.

The Immigration document list itself requests tax/GST and Social Security evidence in appropriate cases, showing that a functioning local business may need to demonstrate broader compliance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Belize investor residence threshold?

The current official Temporary Residence threshold is at least BZ$500,000 of investment in Belize.

How long is Temporary Residence valid?

One year, renewable annually.

Is it citizenship by investment?

No. The route is a renewable residence status. Belize citizenship by registration has separate rules and ordinary Permanent Residence continuity requirements.

Does buying BZ$500,000 of property guarantee approval?

No. Property title can be part of the investment evidence, but the application also requires the rest of the residence and admissibility documentation and an approved Immigration decision.

Can I work in my investment business?

Assess the separate Temporary Employment Permit requirements if you will personally work or manage in Belize.
