Sweden higher-education study and post-study routes in 2026
A non-EU/EEA student admitted to higher education generally needs a residence permit for studies. The applicant must be finally admitted to full-time studies, pay tuition before applying where required, arrange health insurance where applicable, and meet the maintenance requirement.
For applications in 2026, the standard maintenance requirement is at least SEK 10,656 per month.
For bachelor's and master's students whose permit was granted on or after 11 June 2026, work in Sweden is generally limited to 15 hours per week during the academic period. Listed exceptions include work that forms part of education, certain institution-based student/research roles, and work during June, July and August.
After completed bachelor's or master's studies in Sweden, a qualifying graduate can receive a permit to look for work or explore starting a business for up to one year. After completed doctoral studies, the post-study permit can be granted for between one year and 18 months.
