Changing from Student to work status in Japan in 2026

Graduating from a Japanese school does not automatically turn Student status into work authorization. A graduate who will begin professional employment must hold a status of residence that permits the intended job.

Engineer/Humanities is a common path

For many graduates entering professional roles, the relevant category is Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services.

ISA evaluates whether the job duties fit the status and whether the applicant's education or professional background satisfies the applicable criteria.

Change of status is a separate application

A person already in Japan under Student status normally applies for permission to change status of residence before beginning the new work activity.

The immigration decision concerns the actual job, organization and applicant qualifications. A job offer by itself does not guarantee approval.

Continued job hunting after graduation

ISA provides a Designated Activities framework for certain graduates of Japanese universities and eligible vocational programs who want to continue job hunting after graduation.

This is not the same as a general open work visa. The applicant must fit the official continued-job-hunting category and maintain the permitted activity.

J-Find is a different program

J-Find is aimed at recent graduates of qualifying highly ranked overseas universities and can support job-hunting or startup preparation. It should not be confused with the continued-job-hunting option for people graduating in Japan.

Highly skilled option

A graduate who secures a sufficiently strong qualifying role may also evaluate the Highly Skilled Professional framework. That route has separate points or J-Skip criteria.
