Business Visa in India
India's Business Visa (B Visa) is the main legal category for many foreign entrepreneurs, founders, directors and investors who need to enter India for qualifying business purposes.
Founder and entrepreneur activity
Official Ministry of Home Affairs guidance includes foreign nationals who wish to establish an industrial or business venture or explore possibilities to set one up in India. It also covers partners and company directors, technical and board meetings, recruitment activity, buyers, exhibitions and other listed commercial purposes.
That means a foreign startup founder may map to the Business Visa when the actual activity fits those rules. India did not publish a separate universal "startup founder visa" in the official visa catalogue reviewed for the January 2025 snapshot.
Investor activity
Business Visa guidance also covers investors and people establishing business ventures. This should be distinguished from the separate Permanent Residency Status for Foreign Investors, which has much higher FDI and employment thresholds and grants a different status.
Not full-time employment
The Business Visa is not for full-time employment in India and is not intended for money lending, petty business or petty trade. Foreign nationals executing contracts/projects may require the appropriate employment or project route instead.
Official guidance permits multiple-entry Business Visas for up to five years or a shorter period as required, with stay conditions determined by the issuing mission.
See the e-Business Visa for eligible short-stay electronic applications, India hub, business visas, investor visas, Asia, and the legal disclaimer.
