Iceland expert-knowledge work permit in 2026

This route is for a specific job with a specific employer. The job must require expertise according to Icelandic law or practice, and the applicant's expertise must be essential to the company.

Qualifying expertise can consist of recognized university-level education, industrial training, artistic training or technical training. The authorities may ask for evidence of education or other confirmation that the job genuinely requires the claimed level of expertise.

Labour-market and authority roles

Since 8 July 2026, work-permit applications are submitted to and processed by the Directorate of Immigration. The official expert-permit rules still require the employer to have requested assistance from the Directorate of Labour to find a worker in Iceland and within the EEA/EFTA states or the Faroe Islands.

That distinction matters: the Directorate of Labour can remain part of the recruitment evidence, while the Directorate of Immigration is now the work-permit issuing authority.

Duration and employer changes

Expert work permits are generally granted for one year, but may be granted or extended for up to four years at a time. The associated residence permission cannot outlast the qualifying work permission.

The permit is linked to the employer and job. A new employer requires a new work permit before the new employment begins.

If an expert employment relationship ends and the residence permit is revoked, the person may be granted a residence permit for up to one year to look for another expert-level job.

The ordinary secure-means reference used across residence permits is ISK 259,951 per month for an adult individual for applications received from 18 May 2026.
