Senior Employee Permanent Residence in China — January 2025 snapshot

China's permanent-residence rules include a route for certain senior employees and senior professionals. It is much narrower than an ordinary work visa.

January 2025 conditions

Under the NIA guideline, the relevant category includes applicants who hold positions such as deputy general manager or factory deputy director or above, or qualifying professional positions such as associate professor or associate researcher or above, or who receive equivalent treatment.

The applicant must have held the qualifying position in China for at least four consecutive years, have resided in China for a cumulative period of at least three years within those four years, and have a good tax record.

Work residence comes first for most employees

Most foreign workers do not enter directly through permanent residence. They use the Z Visa, Work Permit and Work Residence framework and only later assess whether they meet a permanent-residence category.

High-level specialists may also need to compare the R Visa and High-Level Talent route.
