Burundi Digital Nomad and Remote Work Rules in 2026
Burundi does not publish a dedicated national digital-nomad or remote-worker visa in the official sources reviewed for 2026.
A normal entry visa or visa-free regional entry should not be relabeled as a remote-work authorization.
Entry permission is not work permission
Official tourism guidance lists transit, entry and multiple-entry visas. Those documents address entry and stay.
Burundi's employment ordinance separately regulates foreign work through work permits and special work authorizations. Longer residence is separately addressed through the establishment-visa framework.
Working remotely for a foreign employer
Official social-security material recognizes some foreign workers employed by an enterprise abroad and temporarily posted to Burundi, subject to duration and reciprocity/agreement conditions.
That is not a general digital-nomad immigration programme.
A remote employee working habitually from Burundi should obtain migration-authority confirmation of the work/residence treatment rather than assuming foreign payroll creates an exemption.
The 90-day work distinction
The 2022 employment ordinance distinguishes:
- employment longer than 90 days: work permit;
- employment of 90 days or less: special work authorization.
The ordinance is employment-focused, so an unusual remote arrangement needs factual classification rather than an invented “nomad visa” label.
Can a remote worker use the establishment visa?
Only if the applicant actually satisfies the published requirements.
The establishment-visa page requires at least six months already spent in Burundi and, for a lucrative activity, NIF and trade-register evidence. It is not presented as an instant pre-arrival digital-nomad visa.
Remote contractor or founder
A remote contractor creating a genuine Burundi business may need to analyze business registration, tax registration, establishment status and work authorization separately.
