Burundi Establishment Visa in 2026

Burundi's Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes a Visa d'établissement for foreign nationals establishing longer residence. It is distinct from an ordinary entry visa and from a work permit.

Requirements

The current public checklist includes:

  • an approved request addressed to the Commissioner General for Migration;
  • passport photocopy;
  • current-visa photocopy;
  • passport photograph;
  • proof that the applicant has spent at least six months in Burundi;
  • for company employees: employment contract, service certificate and undertaking/engagement document; and
  • for a lucrative activity: Tax Identification Number (NIF) and trade-register evidence.

The ministry notes that additional documents can be requested according to the applicant's status.

Fee and validity

The ministry currently publishes:

  • Fee: USD 500
  • Validity: 2 years

Those figures apply to the establishment visa, not to ordinary entry visas or the work-permit process.

Why the six-month rule matters

The public requirement to have already spent at least six months in Burundi means the visa d'établissement is not presented as a generic pre-arrival residence visa for every applicant.

A prospective resident should confirm with the Commissioner General for Migration how the requirement applies to the intended status and existing stay history.

Employees

Employees need the immigration evidence requested on the establishment-visa page and must separately comply with Burundi's work-authorization rules.

Employment longer than 90 days generally uses a work permit. Shorter employment uses special work authorization. See the work-permit guide.

Entrepreneurs and self-employed people

The NIF + trade-register requirement makes the establishment visa relevant to foreign business operators, but business registration is not the same as visa approval.

Secure residence card

Burundi's Ministry of Finance published a new ordinance in July 2026 regulating the secure residence card for foreigners living in Burundi for the 2026/2027 financial year.

Because that instrument is newer than prior card rules, older fee tables should not be reused as current without checking the latest ordinance and migration-authority implementation.
