Brunei Professional Visit Visa and Project Work Pass

Brunei has project-based professional work categories that are narrower than an ordinary Employment Work Pass and much narrower than a digital-nomad visa.

Professional Visit Visa: less than 3 months

Immigration says the professional visa/pass is for foreign nationals entering for an official professional visit where their skills or expertise are required. The application is submitted by the applicant's sponsor, normally a company representative.

The Department of Labour's current handbook defines the Professional Visit Visa as professional/expert work required for a particular project awarded in Brunei for less than 3 months.

Special Authorisation Work Pass: less than one year

The same Labour handbook defines a Special Authorisation Work Pass as a licence issued by the Commissioner of Labour to an employer for an immigrant employee working on a particular project for less than one year.

It is an employer/project instrument, not a self-sponsored visa. Immigration entry/pass requirements still need to be satisfied.

Sponsorship and project evidence

Immigration's current professional-visit document list asks for sponsor/company documentation, passport, curriculum vitae and project award/appointment evidence. Intra-corporate transfer cases also require confirmation from the related company abroad.

Which route fits?

  • Defined expert project under 3 months: Professional Visit Visa may fit.
  • Project assignment under one year: employer should assess the Special Authorisation Work Pass and required Immigration permission.
  • Ongoing specialist role: compare the Long-Term Professional Pass.
  • Ordinary local employee: use the Employment Work Pass.

These project categories are not digital-nomad permits.
