Brunei Darussalam Immigration for Work, Business and Remote Professionals in 2026

Brunei does not use one catch-all visa for foreign workers, founders or remote professionals. The correct route depends on the actual activity: local employment, company ownership/investment, professional expertise, a short project assignment, or a qualifying permanent-residence category.

Verified 18 September 2026: official Brunei sources do not publish a dedicated digital-nomad visa, startup visa, or freelancer visa. Those search terms map to real work, business-owner, professional or company-registration rules instead.

Work and business routes

Foreign employees need valid Immigration permission plus the relevant employer-side Labour approvals. The Immigration Work Pass Division requires the foreign-worker licence/work-pass recommendation documents alongside passport, sponsor and medical documents.

For owners and investors, Immigration publishes a Long-Term Business Visit Pass for qualifying foreign company owners and investors whose activity contributes to Brunei's socio-economic development. The public page does not publish a universal minimum investment amount or guaranteed duration.

Professional routes

Immigration also publishes a Long-Term Professional Visit Pass for qualifying foreign experts and professionals whose expertise is beneficial and needed for Brunei's development.

For shorter project assignments, the Department of Labour's current handbook defines a Professional Visit Visa as project-based expert/professional work for less than 3 months. It separately defines a Special Authorisation Work Pass for an immigrant employee on a particular project for less than one year.

These are project/sponsor routes, not digital-nomad visas.

Digital nomad and remote work

No dedicated Brunei digital-nomad or remote-worker visa was identified. A social visit or Business Visit Visa should not be treated as work authorization; Immigration expressly states that the Business Visit Visa is not for working for the company or waiting on Labour quota/permission.

Startup, freelancer and self-employment searches

Brunei supports entrepreneurship, but business-support programmes are not immigration visas. ROCBN limits ordinary sole proprietorships and partnerships to Brunei Citizens and Permanent Residents. A foreign national may participate through an eligible company structure, but company incorporation and personal immigration status remain separate questions.

Permanent residence

The Entry Permit division handles permanent-resident applications. The current eligibility guide, effective from 31 December 2024, is category-based and does not publish a generic rule under which an ordinary work pass automatically converts to permanent residence after a fixed number of years.
