Barbados Permanent Residence and Immigrant Status in 2026

Barbados Immigration currently maintains Permanent Resident Status and Immigrant Status as separate processes. The public pages provide detailed document checklists but do not publish a simple universal rule that every foreign national becomes eligible after a fixed number of years.

Permanent Resident Status — section 5

Immigration's current section 5 checklist asks for civil-status records, medical evidence, police certificates from countries where the applicant lived at least six months during the past three years, photographs, school history, employment evidence, qualifications and passport copy.

The page publishes:

  • BDS $300 application fee; and
  • BDS $1,200 final fee if approved.

It also calls for relationship evidence in cases connected to a Barbadian spouse/parent and official English translations for foreign-language documents.

Immigrant Status — section 6 / section 13(7)

Immigrant Status has its own application and supporting evidence. The public checklist includes birth/marriage records, medical evidence, police certificates, school history, qualifications, employment letter and passport.

It contains two particularly useful economic-life instructions:

If setting up a business, the applicant must provide a detailed business cover letter, location, certificate of registration/articles of incorporation, proof of finances and proof of funds brought to Barbados.

If over age 60, the applicant must provide means of support, income and proof of property.

Those requirements explain why generic searches such as “Barbados entrepreneur residence” or “Barbados retirement visa” may actually point toward Immigrant Status or the Special Entry Permit, rather than a dedicated visa with that marketing name.

No published automatic years-to-PR rule

The current Immigration pages reviewed on 17 September 2026 do not publish a universal “live here X years and automatically get permanent residence” formula. Eligibility should therefore be confirmed against the applicant's statutory category and Immigration's current decision framework.

Citizenship is separate

Barbados Immigration publishes separate citizenship/registration/naturalisation forms, and the Barbados Citizenship Act remains part of the current framework. Permanent or immigrant status should not be described as citizenship.

The current Citizenship page lists multiple constitutional/statutory categories, including marriage/descent/registration and naturalisation documentation. It publishes BDS $300 application and BDS $1,500 final fees for several listed citizenship applications, but different routes can have different forms/fees.

2026 reform is pending, not law

Barbados Parliament lists both the Immigration Bill, 2026 and Barbados Citizenship Bill, 2026 as bills before the House. They have not been listed as passed Acts as of this verification date. Proposed new residence/citizenship rules therefore should not be used as if already in force.

Work rights

Do not infer universal work rights from the words “permanent resident” or “immigrant” without checking the permission/document actually granted. If work authorization is central to your plan, confirm it in writing with Immigration and compare the ordinary work-permit route.

Relationship to SEP and Welcome Stamp

  • Welcome Stamp is a temporary 12-month remote-work programme, not permanent residence.
  • Special Entry Permit is a separate special residence permission and should not be treated as automatically equivalent to Permanent Resident Status.
  • CARICOM mobility can grant very different regional rights depending on nationality.
