New Zealand Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa in 2026

The Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa changed materially on 24 August 2026. Current applicants should use the new three-pathway framework rather than pre-August summaries.

Applicants generally need to be 55 or younger, have skilled employment or an eligible job offer with an accredited employer, meet the pathway-specific rules, and satisfy health, character and English requirements.

1. Points-based pathway

The points-based route requires 6 points. Points come from one skill category — qualification, income, or recognised occupational registration — with up to 3 additional points available from qualifying New Zealand skilled work experience when needed to reach 6.

The current SMC wage framework uses NZD $35.00/hour from 9 March 2026 as the base SMC wage threshold. Multipliers apply depending on the pathway, occupation skill level and whether income points are being claimed.

2. Skilled Work Experience pathway

This pathway is for people whose skills are demonstrated mainly through experience. Current rules require at least 5 years of directly relevant work experience, including at least 2 years of skilled work experience in New Zealand. Occupation and wage rules, including Red and Amber List restrictions, also apply.

3. Trades and Technician pathway

This pathway requires an eligible trades/technician occupation and relevant qualification. The current framework requires at least 4 years of post-qualification work experience, including at least 18 months of skilled work experience in New Zealand.

Submitting an expression of interest is part of the SMC process. Meeting a points total or experience period does not by itself guarantee an invitation or residence grant.
